I recently read about Jacqueline Fink a mother of three children who lives in
sydney’s Northern beaches with her husband learnt how to knit through her mum
when she was still quite young. She studied law at the university, practiced for
a few years though that never sat well with her, she wanted something she could
call her own. She had a vision one night while sleeping. The vision transformed
her life and opened the door to extreme knitting. In her vision, she had a big,
loud booming voice that spoke to her saying she needs to knit and the knitting
needs to be big the command was so terrifying cos it was so profound that she
could not ignore the voice but had to obey. The next day after the vision she
kicked start her knitting career.
She uses custom-built, industrial-sized knitting needles and her whole
body sitting on an armless chair to support the needles over three and a half
feet (110 centimeters) long, made of PVC plumber’s pipe with hand-turned timber
ends and the weight of the wool, which can be 11 pounds (5 kilograms) for an
average throw to knit extreme-scale textiles and art installations at her home
in Sydney, using high-grade merino roving, yarn and wool sourced from
Australia and New Zealand. She is a crafter of oversized hand knitted
textiles, soft furnishings and installations using naturally colored high
quality merino wool and other natural fibers. Effectively handling delicate merino wool on a large scale took her
over two years of research and experimentation. She sits on an armless chair to
support the needles — over three and a half feet (110 centimeters) long, made
of PVC plumber’s pipe with hand-turned timber ends — and the weight of the
wool, which can be 11 pounds (5 kilograms) for an average throw.
Her inspiration is drawn from creating something out of nothing, knitting
beautiful bump of unspuned wool, knitting it into a more beautiful piece of
woolie wonder and then putting it through its paces to create an artisan object
that provides immense comfort and joy to others. That deeply satisfy’s her,
knowing that she has created something because some lovely soul wanted it to
exist. Her advice for those who wants to try out knitting is that, they need to
be patience and not to place any great expectations on themselves on their
initial output as knitting is a craft that can take a long time to perfect so
while being persistent, lots of practice is needed as perfecting the tension
and learning the various stitches will eventually fall into place. For more
